As I was attempting to come up with a design for my third and final mask mate in my series, I came across a Facebook post from Katie Clarke. She had an amazing basic outline for a rainbow crocheted ear saver, but no yarn to create the reality. I offered to collaborate with her, and the result is this RainBOW mask mate free crochet pattern. Which I absolutely adore. It was a refreshing change to work with someone else’s general idea instead of just the thoughts in my head.
The RainBOW mask mate can be crocheted fairly quickly and requires only one button to get the job done. The unique construction uses the face mask elastic to shape the bow when in use. My sincerest thanks to Katie for the starting concept and feedback throughout the process. I believe the mask mate free crochet pattern we developed together is beautiful and creative. I hope it helps some folks stay safe and healthy!

Materials for RainBOW Mask Mate
DK Weight Yarn – Less than 10 yards (9.2 m) each of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, and white. Choose a durable yarn that can be washed repeatedly with no issues. My samples were made using King Cole Big Value DK.
Crochet Hook – G-6 (4.00 mm).
White Button – A 3/8″ to 5/8″ button will fit the buttonholes.
Notes for RainBOW Mask Mate
Since the rainbow does not need to be an exact size, I would not personally bother checking gauge. Use the recommended hook size or adjust from that size based on how you crochet (tight, loose, etc).
Each rainbow circle is approximately 3.25″ in diameter. The finished mask mate when flat is about 9″ long from tip of buttonhole to tip of buttonhole. When folded for use with the buttonholes attached to the center button, the bow is approximately 4.25″ long.
sc2tog – [insert hook into st indicated, YO, pull up a lp] x2, YO, pull through all 3 lps.
dc2tog – [insert hook into st indicated, YO, pull up a lp, YO, pull through 2 lps] x2, YO, pull through all 3 lps.
When crocheting, I use invisible starting stitches, including an invisible starting dc2tog, and a standing hdc. To watch my tutorials on these stitches, go to my Crochet Basics Playlist on YouTube.
